Watch Green Day and Jimmy Fallon perform in an NYC subway station

It’s something unpredictable, but in the end it rocks.

Green Day and Jimmy Fallon surprised a group of lucky commuters this week, performing a collection of the Bay Area band’s greatest hits at a New York City subway station.

In a clip aired on Thursday's episode of The Tonight Show, Fallon and Green Day, dressed in their finest 1970s rocker disguises, kicked off their busking session at Rockefeller Center station with a smooth cover of Bad Company’s 1975 hit “Feel Like Makin’ Love.”

Their solid performance (and, likely, the camera crew) soon caught the attention of fans and passersby, who stopped and formed a large crowd around them. After finishing the song, the Tonight Show host took a moment to address the growing audience.

“Let me explain what’s going on here, everybody: My name is Jimmy Fallon and this is Green Day,” he said, removing his disguise as the onlookers began to scream. “They have a new album out this Friday, but they’re going to play a classic for you right now.”

The group then launched into their 1994 hit “Basket Case,” the crowd jumping and loudly singing along with frontman Billie Joe Armstrong.

Fallon, shaking his tambourine, joined bassist Mike Dirnt on backup vocals while drummer Tré Cool kept the beat going fiercely behind them.

Another video reveals that the band also played two new songs — “Dilemma” and “Look Ma, No Brains!” — from their new album, Saviors, before concluding the set with another of their classics, “American Idiot.”

Saviors is out today. Watch Fallon and Green Day regale NYC commuters in the clip above.
