Penn Museum in Philadelphia hosting its own edition

If you live in Philadelphia and are a fan of Nickelodeon’s Legends of the Hidden Temple, “the choices are yours and yours alone.” The city’s Penn Museum is hosting its own competitive event based on the ’90s game show that challenges contestants with knowledge, scavenger hunts, and, of course, temple guards.

Legends of the Hidden Temple: Penn Museum Edition will take place on Wednesday, April 20, starting at 6 p.m. Attendees who purchased $20 tickets can trek through the museum’s galleries with their teams, which include classic names like the Blue Barracudas and the Orange Iguanas.

“We’ve been working for a couple of years now trying to grow our young, professional audience,” Kate Quinn, director of exhibitions at Penn Museum, tells EW. The museum has played host to a series of School Night events, which featured burlesque shows, drag shows, magic shows, scavenger hunts, and social drinking events. But nothing garnered as much attention as Legends of the Hidden Temple.

Various mental and physical challenges will be administered by staffers from Penn Museum, the Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University, the American Philosophical Society Museum, Eastern State Penitentiary, the Mütter Museum of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia, and the Wagner Free Institute of Science. And, yes, you’ll have to watch out for those pesky temple guards.

According to Quinn, the American Philosophical Society Museum is working on a replica of the Steps of Knowledge to quiz contestants on Native American culture, while the Mütter Museum is building their own version of Olmec, the sentient talking head from the original show. Elsewhere, the Academy of Natural Sciences will be hosting a physical challenge based on animal adaptations. Though, Quinn promises they’re very careful with their space as to not harm the exhibits on display in the galleries.

Tickets for the event sold out within 48 hours, but Penn Museum is already looking to host another round. Anyone interested can join the waitlist by emailing events@pennmuseum.org.

This latest in ’90s nostalgia comes on the heels of Nickelodeon’s announcement that a reimagining of Hidden Temple has landed at the network. The game show, which first aired in 1993, featured teams competing in various challenges to earn entrance to the “hidden temple,” where the remaining team would then race against the clock to snag the temple artifact.

The show will be revamped into a live-action TV movie featuring host Kirk Fogg and Olmec. The film, written by Jonny Umansky, Zach Hyatt, and Alex Reid, is expected to drop this fall.
