General Hospital star Maurice Benard is opening up about living with bipolar disorder and a time that it had him so low, he considered taking his own life. The actor, who has starred as Sonny Corinthos on the beloved sudser for the past 30 years, told PEOPLE that he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder — then referred to as manic depression — in 1985 at the age of 22. After incidents at home led his parents to call the police, Benard was taken to a mental institution and later diagnosed with the condition.
George Clooney is the second of the Ocean’s Twelve to drop out of publicity commitments for the film. The reason: He ruptured a disk in his back, according to his spokesperson, Stan Rosenfield, and was unable to travel. Clooney had been scheduled to appear on Good Morning America, The Daily Show, and Charlie Rose during a weeklong swing through New York City. Julia Roberts also had to beg off much of her promotional duties for the film after doctors ordered her on bed rest for the remaining days of her pregnancy.
George Clooney stuck up for his younger self during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live last night — and saved the host from what might have been a very awkward roast in the process. On Thursday, Clooney joined Jimmy Kimmel for the 20th-anniversary episode of his talk show. It was a full circle moment, as Clooney was Kimmel's first guest all the way back in 2003. And in the spirit of celebrating the past, Kimmel treated his audience to a look at some of Clooney's awkward teenage photos, first pulling out a picture featuring a bowl-cut haircut and glasses.
Sitcom star and comedy legend George Lopez doesn't want anyone to get away with dragging drag performers. Appearing on Thursdays' episode of The View, the 61-year-old Lopez vs. Lopez star slammed anti-drag bigotry after cohost Ana Navarro made a joke about Florida's governor, Ron DeSantis, who signed the controversial Parental Rights in Education bill — also known as the "Don't Say Gay" bill — in early 2022, amid a rise in discrimination against drag performers around the country.
George Lucas wants to restore balance to the discourse. While appearing at the Cannes Film Festival, where he is receiving the festival's honorary Palme d'Or, Lucas addressed criticisms of the Star Wars franchise, particularly the first six films. He pushed back against claims that the films feature "all white men," speaking up for the saga's diverse range of characters and female heroes. "They would say, ‘It’s all white men,'” Lucas said, according to Variety.
There’s a moment in George Michael’s music video for “Freedom! ’90” where director David Fincher’s camera zooms in on a leather jacket hanging in a closet. It’s the piece Michael sported proudly three years earlier in the music video for “Faith” — the item that helped Michael reinvent himself from the squeaky-clean teen idol in Wham! into a bad-ass sex god of the 1980s. But with “Freedom! ’90,” Michael sought to overhaul his image once again.
The nefarious Faith Militant (a.k.a. The Sparrows) in HBO’s Game of Thrones has a rather well-known inspiration. In the show, the powerful King’s Landing cult that’s playing an increasingly pivotal role during season 5 has a legion of devout followers, violently punishes any perceived sin and is led by a mysterious and manipulative man called the High Sparrow. Author George R.R. Martin frequently uses events and ideas from European history for this A Song of Ice and Fire saga, and the Faith Militant is no exception.
Georgia Dobbins, co-writer of Motown's first No. 1 hit "Please Mr. Postman" as part of The Marvelettes, died on Sept. 18 from cardiac arrest. She was 78. According to an obituary posted by a funeral home in her local Inkster, Mich., her family will celebrate her life at a service to be held on Sept. 29. Even though Dobbins spent a short time with the quintet she helped found in the early 1960s, it was thanks to "
Gerard Way is an outsider of sorts — and he’s okay with that. “I learned to accept my place in music as, I’m extremely different but that’s how I’m needed and that’s why I belong,” Way tells EW. Hence the title of his debut solo album: Hesitant Alien. After fronting My Chemical Romance for 12 years, Way announced the band’s breakup in 2013 with an essay that hinted at music to come.
