Maya Kazan teases tension for Zoe and Crane

The Witnesses may be back together, but not every relationship in Sleepy Hollow is on the upswing.

In a case of unfortunate timing, Crane (Tom Mison) lost partner Abbie (Nicole Beharie) not long after going on his first date with historian Zoe Corinth (Maya Kazan). Now that Abbie has returned from another dimension, it’s time to find out how Crane and Zoe’s relationship fared while he was preoccupied by the search for his fellow Witness. In advance of Friday’s episode of Sleepy Hollow, EW checked in with Kazan to find out what’s in store for her character, why Zoe is “close to [her] heart,” and whether she’d like to see Crane and Abbie take it to the next level.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: What can you tease about Zoe’s return?

MAYA KAZAN: There’s some tension between Zoe and Crane. In my experience, relationships don’t go very well when both parties are not honest with one another, and Crane has not been able to be very honest with Zoe, because he can’t tell her about the supernatural that’s going on in Sleepy Hollow. So we’ll see some tension as a result of that.

Have you been petitioning to get Zoe in on the supernatural action?

I was definitely hoping that would happen, but it seems like maybe not yet.

I don’t want to spoil anything, but she does get a little taste of the supernatural here.

She does! She has a little bit of a brush with the supernatural in this episode — that’s true. And I will say that I feel like in this episode, Crane and Zoe come to a new, more profound understanding of one another.

People are very invested in the relationships on this show. What kind of response have you gotten from fans?

Fans of Sleepy Hollow are really passionate, and I definitely have received a little bit of pushback — but also some fans who are just excited to see Crane in a romantic situation at all. But I do think that people really ‘ship Abbie and Crane, and Zoe is in the middle, so I understand why people might not be that excited to see her.

Had you seen Sleepy Hollow before you got the part?

Yeah, I’m a fan of the show! I think it’s really fun.

What’s your take on Abbie and Crane?

I think it’s really fun to want them to get together, and I feel like if they did get together, I don’t know what that would look like. It might not be quite as much fun. But I definitely am enjoying wanting them to get together.

How was Zoe pitched to you when you joined the show?

She was pitched to me as a really nerdy and sweet girl who really cared about history, and I thought that was a pretty good match for Crane. She, I think, really appreciates the old fashioned about him, and I think that he needs someone, whoever that is, to appreciate that quirky, old-world mentality that he has.

Are you a history fan? Did you do any research?

I am a fan of history, so I didn’t feel like I needed to do specific research because I felt like I already am a complete nerd at heart. [Laughs] So it’s not that far for me to go. I think that she got a little fancier and cuter as the show went on, as I think sometimes happens with nerds on TV, but I feel like that sort of geeky and history buff thing is very close to my heart already.

Were you brought in on the decision to make her a little less nerdy as she went on, or do you think that was that just uncovering new sides of her character?

I think that was just uncovering new sides of her character, you know? Nerds can be sexy too.

Come back to EW.com after Friday’s episode of Sleepy Hollow for more of Kazan’s thoughts.
