'Mad Max: Fury Road': Exclusive first look

George Miller is about to walk his biggest dog yet—Mad Max: Fury Road, a $150 million reboot of the film that ignited his iconic ’80s franchise—with a new cast and a bold new idea.

In a future where fuel is scarce and water is scarcer, damaged warrior Max Rockatansky (Tom Hardy) is drawn into the struggle of Imperator Furiosa (Charlize Theron), a badass commander who has fled an evil warlord’s citadel with a harem of women who are looking for a new home. “I wanted to tell a linear story—a chase that starts as the movie begins and continues for 110 minutes,” Miller says. There are few digital effects and even less dialogue in the movie; “in this crucible of very intense action,” he continues, “the characters are revealed.”

To create his new apocalypse, Miller had to stare down four horsemen of his own: 9/11, global warming, searing African deserts, and, of course, a plague of Internet rumors. Check out how he did in this exclusive clip, which evokes the original film before showing off footage from the reboot. Fury Road hits theaters May 15.
