The 2017 Toronto International Film Festival has unveiled its first round of programming for its upcoming 42nd edition.
TIFF artistic director Cameron Bailey and CEO Piers Handling announced the first round of films screening in the Galas and Special Presentations sections, including 25 world premieres among 47 films announced thus far.
Among the lineup are new films from Angelina Jolie, who makes her fourth major directorial bow with First They Killed My Father, Jennifer Lawrence and Darren Aronofsky’s collaborative thriller mother!, Emma Stone and Steve Carell’s sports biopic Battle of the Sexes, Margot Robbie’s Tonya Harding drama I, Tonya, Benedict Cumberbatch’s Thomas Edison/George Westinghouse historical picture The Current War, Andy Serkis’ Breathe, Martin McDonagh’s Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, Guillermo del Toro’s The Shape of Water, George Clooney’s Suburbicon, Boston Marathon bombing drama Stronger, and Alexander Payne’s Downsizing, which was previously announced as part of the 2017 Venice International Film Festival.
Other films showing include early-year festival favorites, including Cannes’ BPM (Beats Per Minute), Luca Guadagnino’s Sundance drama Call Me By Your Name, starring Timothée Chalamet and Armie Hammer, and Dee Rees’ Mudbound, which also bowed at Sundance in January.
Alongside fellow festivals in Telluride, New York, and Venice, TIFF has established itself as an essential cog in the four-armed fall festival Oscar machine, with its prestigious People’s Choice Award signaling either a Best Picture win or nomination for eight of its last 10 winners since 2007. In addition to screening strong Cannes holdovers like Toni Erdmann, Aquarius, Elle, and American Honey last year, TIFF premiered — and consequently thrust into the Oscar race — Garth Davis’ Lion, which earned a total of six nominations, and hosted special screenings of fellow Best Picture contenders Arrival, Manchester by the Sea, La La Land, and eventual winner Moonlight.
The first portion of TIFF’s 2017 lineup, which will show throughout the festival’s Sept. 7-17 run (tickets available now here), includes:
