Danny Brown’s next album will be titled Atrocity Exhibition, the Detroit rapper announced late Sunday night.
The title draws from Joy Division’s 1980 song of the same name, which was in turn inspired by J.G. Ballard’s eponymous 1970 collection of condensed novels.
“This is the way!!!! ….. Step inside!!!!” Brown wrote on Twitter with the announcement. He also shared a screengrab of lyrics from Joy Division’s original track via Instagram.
The reference aligns with what Brown has previously said about the record: In June, he told Beats 1 host Zane Lowe that the collection was largely influenced by Talking Heads, a band that, like Joy Division, ruled the ’70s and ’80s.
Brown has yet to announce a release date for Atrocity, but wrote on Instagram in June that he was “putting the final touches” on the project. A few days later, he dropped “When It Rain” via a trippy, VHS-style music video. The single served as his first taste of solo music since 2013’s critically acclaimed Old.
Hours after sharing the album news, Brown announced a North American tour in support of Atrocity. The trek, dubbed The Exhibition 2016, launches July 25 in New York, continues through the fall with stops in Chicago, Los Angeles, and Toronto, and wraps Nov. 5 in Cleveland, Ohio. ZelooperZ — a fellow member of Brown’s hip-hop collective Bruiser Brigade — and Houston rapper Maxo Kream will join him on the road. See dates below.
