Billy Joel dedicates rare track to victims of 'senseless massacre' in Orlando

Friday night during his latest monthly concert at New York’s Madison Square Garden, Billy Joel dedicated his song “You’re Only Human (Second Wind)” to the victims of last weekend’s shooting at an Orlando, Florida gay nightclub that left 50 dead, including the shooter.

“Us guys have been to Orlando many times, and we will be back there again,” Joel said of his band before dedicating the concert to the people of Orlando, “especially the families and the friends and the loved ones who were the victims of this senseless, senseless massacre.”

“You are with us, we are with you,” he added, starting in on a song he says he hasn’t performed in some 25 years. “We may screw this up, but at least you know we’re not on tape,” he said to cheers of support from the sold-out audience. “It’ll be an authentic rock and roll f— up.”

The Piano Man is just the latest musician paying tribute to the Orlando killings. Adele, the Dixie Chicks (who were also at MSG), Elton John, Beyoncé, and Melissa Etheridge are among those dedicating shows and song to the victims. Christina Aguilera, like Etheridge, recorded a new song, “Change,” and Ellen DeGeneres released a “Kindness” t-shirt, with proceeds from both going to the National Compassion Fund. Hamilton star and creator Lin-Manual Miranda also launched a merchandise line to help fund Equality Cares in Florida.
