Andy Samberg Connor4Real costume breakdown

For their new feature film, Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping, the Lonely Island trio — the guys behind SNL viral hits like “D— in a Box” and “Lazy Sunday” — created a pop mockumentary, complete with their own hip-hop star: Conner4Real (Andy Samberg). “We decided early on that we wanted Conner to be the embodiment of that culture,” says Samberg, who wrote the script with codirectors Jorma Taccone and Akiva Schaffer. “But we wanted it to be the loudest and most poppy and silly [aspects of it].”

Costume director Sophie de Rakoff (Legally Blonde) pulled more than 100 outfits for Conner — and the threads helped Samberg get into character. “The second you put on a bunch of chains and those pants,” he says, “you understand why all these dudes walk and talk the way that they do.” This particular outfit (above), worn while Conner is trying to spice things up on stage, is one of Samberg’s favorites: “It’s almost like the crazy fuzzy monster from old Bugs Bunny cartoons, mixed with some sort of weird ’90s angel.”

Read on for a breakdown of the look from Samberg and de Rakoff.

Sir Mix a Lot

Samberg is wearing an extra-tall Stetson called a Tom Mix, named for the silent-film-era cowboy. As for the feather, “Well, you know, it’s Conner— you’ve got to sauce it up a bit,” says de Rakoff. The neckerchief she bedazzled herself (of course).

Great Scott!

De Rakoff tracked down this Jeremy Scott jacket on eBay. “I knew what I wanted, and we stalked it until we found it,” she says. (Adds Samberg: “Sophie was very excited about this jacket.”)

Lamb Chaps

“These chaps and the jacket, one won’t work without the other,” says de Rakoff. She knew she wanted Conner’s chaps to be a bright blue, and she finally found the appropriate Mongolian lambskin in New York City and had the chaps shipped out and made.

Glove Love

It’s not just Conner who loves fingerless gloves. “As children of the ’80s, we will forever think fingerless gloves are nonironically cool,” says Samberg. Indeed, de Rakoff adds: “The gloves became a bit of a signature thing for him.”

Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping opens June 3.
